Organizing Series DAY #2 — Closet Part 1

Welcome to Day 2 of the RMS 3-Day Organizing Series. If you haven't read Day 1 of the series, it’s best you read it now. In today's video we will be focusing on the closet. Because this area is full of memories and possessions and space I will be splitting this area into two parts. Part 1 will focus on dresses, bags and bottoms (jeans, skirts, shorts and pants).

Before we begin make sure you print out my Organizing Series Checklist which itemizes the items that you may have in your space, let's you know the number of items you have and will help you through this journey.

Let’s get right into it.

STEP #1

Go in your closet and take out all of your dresses, bottoms and bags. This will make the de-cluttering process so much easier. Place them either on your bed or on the floor.

Group your like items with like items and the odd ones together.

If you have any dry cleaned items still in the plastic take those out now. FYI: when you bring home your dry cleaned items be sure to take them out of the plastic the moment you get home. You don’t want chemicals marinating into your clothes.

STEP #2

Similar to Day 1, go through each item and ask yourself these five questions:

  1. When's the last time I wore this?
  2. Does it fit my current style?
  3. Do I need it?
  4. Do I truly love it?
  5. Does it help boost my confidence?

Make sure you hold each item and feel it. Hold it up so it's in your face and feel the energy it's letting off.  If you don't feel love for the item then it's time to find it another home.

For the items you are donating, which are stuff that bring no value to your life today, put them in a bag and put them away. We won’t be dropping them off until tomorrow after we finish Day 3.

For the items you will be throwing away. These are items that are worn and can't be repaired, are old or torn up. Put these items in a bag and discard them ASAP.

This will prevent you from going back in the bag and putting it back into your closet, which beats the point of all of this.

STEP #3

Now it’s time to put your items back into the closet.

Wait!!! Before that, let's give our closets a good cleaning. Sweep, vacuum, dust and wipe down all shelves or surface areas.

STEP #4

Before we put them back let's decide where each clothes category will be placed. I used clothes dividers to separate my clothes.

Let's begin with bottoms. Beginning from the left I hang my skirts first I like to put like colors together. Personally I don't follow a color wheel I just place colors next to other colors that are similar or in contrast.

After skirts, I put shorts then I end with pants.

Side note: I like to hang my dresses in half so they're on the same level as all of my bottoms. For those more delicate dresses I hang them on my clothes rack outside of the closet (click here for the DIY)

STEP #5

Fold all my jeans and place them in a bin.  Depending on the amount of jeans you owe, I prefer folding my jeans rather than hanging them to create more space for other clothing items.

STEP #6

The last part is to put away the bags. You can put these either on a shelf, door hanger or whichever area is most functional for them. You can also take it a step further and place bag dividers (like this) between each bag to separate them. In my closet, I put my big to medium bags on the top shelf and my clutch bags in a bin.

YOU’RE ALL DONE

That's it. You did it again! You've just completed Part 1 of your closet!

Now that you've accomplished this goal treat yourself to something delicious. You're halfway completed and the finish line is near.

See you tomorrow where we will be focusing on Part 2 of the closet.
